The Wind Powered Generators 101
Written by Green Giant
Sunday, 11 May 2008

You may have noticed that there have been wind powered generators going up in certain areas of the United States. I know that there are now some in my part of New York State, and there are also some near the Reading area of Pennsylvania.I am sure these are not the only ones.I commented to my husband that it seems we are going back in time to energy sources that our great grandparents might have once used. This is mostly because this is a clean and cheap way to get energy, and the environment is in desperate need of a break.Did you know that you too can take advantage of this technology on a smaller scale?

The larger wind powered generators you see are going to bring you energy through your electric company. My local company sent out a letter with details about how you can use this technology for your own personal electric use.You can choose where you want your energy to come from, and the wind powered generators are just one of the options from which we can choose. We have yet to sign up, but it is something I am going to do before the summer approaches.I like the idea of using clean means of generating the electricity that I use in my home.

While those wind powered generators are large, and you could never afford one for your own use, there are some smaller ones out there. These are largely for small items, but they can be useful to generate small amounts of wind powered energy. Some are advertised as ways to power up cell phones without plugging them into the wall, or to run some of the smaller appliances in your home. It would depend on the size of the wind powered generators that you get and how often you wish to use them.

You can hope that generators powered by the wind become more and more common in our daily energy use, but you may have to realize you may not be able to use these on your property. It does depend on how much wind you get.You may be in a spot that does not get much, and that means your wind powered generators are not going to help much. They are going to be great when they can work, but you should know there are going to be days when they simply cannot generate a lot of extra power for whatever use you have in mind.

Every Stock Investor Should Be A TV Critic
Friday, 02 May 2008

The financial media affects the stock market greatly with the information they reveal on a daily basis, something any stock 101 tutorial teaches.  It’s where every investor obtains the majority of their stock knowledge and it’s where many investors retrieve advice for buying and selling stocks.  Financial media outlets like CNBC, local news, Wall Street Journal, and the internet are all contributing factors that influences ultimately how the market moves.

This type of media is all over the world and there is no shortage of ways to find it.  And with all that information out there, it’s hard to figure out what is the best and most accurate stock knowledge.  It doesn’t matter whose talking nobody, especially beginner stock investors, can tell if the words they say are completely credible.

Nothing is more unpredictable than television. Financial broadcasting on CNBC works like any talk show or interview show.  They find many analysts, brokers, and other important financial figures and ask them questions most of us want answers to.  Especially for beginner stock investors, because most believe the best stock knowledge they can find is from the analyst that speaks on networks.  Yet not every single person they interview is the best and most credible source.  Do you really think that every single person that’s been interviewed has the best stock knowledge out there?

From time to time, a famous/genius analyst will find their way on these shows for interviews.  On a side note, if you want great stock knowledge, there is nobody better to learn from like these famous/genius analysts because they know better than all when it comes to the stock market.  And if you have the opportunity to listen to great investors like Carl Icahn or Warren Buffet, do whatever you can to listen and absorb all the stock knowledge from them.

To continue on, even though these famous analysts give great stock 101 information, you can’t always rely on them.  These analysts only come on air to better themselves or the companies they work for.  Therefore, they only worry about themselves and not about you.  And, if the interview doesn’t benefit them, there is no point of them to come on the show.  They have nothing to win and everything to lose.  If these famous/genius analysts do come on the air, be aware that they’re there to only for themselves.  But also know that it’s important to listen, especially for beginner stock investors, because you won’t find better stock knowledge that from popular analysts with great experience.

If you found this stock 101 lesson to be helpful and wish to learn more about beginner stock investing, please visit my website.  My site contains valuable stock knowledge including investing rules and tips that I’ve learned from my 20 years in the stock market.  Click here for stock 101.

Carnival Glass: Beautiful And Valuable
Written by Gail Matthewson
Friday, 07 March 2008

Carnival Glass was initially called Iridescent Ware when it was introduced in late 1907. The name carnival glass was not commonly used until collectors in the 1950s began to refer to it as such. This innovative glassware typically featured a vivid metallic sheen of changing hues on pressed glass articles made in highly-patterned moulds. The secret behind the Iridescent Ware was a special spray of metallic salts on the glass while it was very hot.

Carnival glass is made as both functional and ornamental objects. This is an inexpensive pressed glass and found in a wide spectrum of colors. Sometimes glass workers refer this as dope glass because the process of applying the iridescent coloring to the surface is called doping. This was made in over 150 patterns and many different pieces from the year 1907 but since it did not command the prices expected it was subsequently discounted.

The glass is produced in various translucent colors. Primarily amongst these are amethyst, marigold, cobalt, green, and red. Sometimes it is also made in opaque white which is called milk glass. A semi-transparent or translucent pale-green hue was also available before the widespread knowledge of radiation hazards. this glass was called Vaseline or uranium glass. Both of these contain traces of uranium salts which gives the glass a faint green glow when exposed to UV light.

Millersburg glass Company is one of the largest producers of this kind of glass. Crystals were the first glass products of the company. But they decided to go for iridescent glassware to ride the wave of enthusiasm. So, during the early 1910, the line of Radium Glassware was brought out by Millersburg glass Company.

Carnival glass is a collector's item. Prices of these glasses vary wildly from a few dollars to thousands of dollars. Carnival glass has become antique glass collectible and there is a good active market for it.

The carnival glass is very difficult to identify. Unfortunately, most of the manufacturers avoid including a maker's mark in their product. Others did so only for part of the time they manufactured the glass. The process of identification involves matching of patterns, colors, sheen, edges, thickness, factors found in old manufacturer's trade catalogs and other known examples, or other reference material. Identifying this glass has become a challenge even to experts since many manufacturers produced duplicates of their rivals' popular patterns.

At the time of introduction in late 1907 the carnival glass was called as Iridescent Ware. However, people started using the name carnival only after collectors in the 1950s began to refer to it as such. Among the greatest producers of this type of glass was Millersburg glass Company in Ohio. The first glass products by that company were crystal however the Millersburg plant decided to follow success for iridescent glassware. There is a very active market for this item since it has become an antique glass collectible. So even for an experienced expert this is a hard task.

Carnival Glass Bowls On Their Way Back
Written by Fern Smith
Thursday, 06 March 2008

Carnival glass bowls form part of the large carnival glass collectible items. These are produced by pressing the glass and coating it with an iridescent coating which gives it shiny look. This process is known as doping, hence this glass is also sometimes referred to as dope glass. This process was first adopted in the early 1900s and it lasted only till the mid to late thirties, and today is extinct.

The glass manufacturer Fenton is the first, largest and widely recognized producer of carnival glass. To start with, this company decorated blank glass produced by other companies. In 1907 they started creating carnival glass. Fenton marketed its glassware immediately after starting production as "Iridill" or iridescent ware. This became popular and many other companies followed suit by making and marketing their own carnival glass bowls.

During the Depression in the late 1920s, demand on products began to decrease which impacted to sales reduction and partly dissemination of the market of glass companies. Because of this, some companies started selling merchandise to extremely low prices, which led to closure of business, just to get rid of stocks to carnivals which they use as prizes on games.

In the fifties, carnival glass bowls experienced a resurgence in popularity. Glass collectors coined the term "carnival glass" for these creations after learning of their term as carnival prizes. Several companies began making reproductions, and to this day carnival glass, especially antique Fenton glass, is a prized collectable.

Presently, carnival glass can be found in auctions, antique shops, and online for various prices. Fenton antique glass fetches high prices, as well as other well-known carnival glass. Some of the more common colors are marigold, as well as dark hues like blue and green. The most prized and pricey kinds of carnival glass bowls are red or pastel colored. One rare ice-blue plate even sold for $16,327.55 on a popular auction website!

For the would-be collector, there are many resources full of information available. Many websites and books are available for information on the many shapes and sizes these antiques come in. There are even organizations for would-be enthusiasts, which is a great way to learn more.

One great collectible is carnival glass bowls. These are produced by pressing the glass and coating it which gives it shiny look. This process is known as doping, hence this glass is also sometimes referred to as dope glass. Adopted in the early 1900s it lasted only till the mid to late thirties, and today is extinct. One company, fenton glassware was marketed as "Iridill" or iridescent ware. It quickly became a hit and many other companies began copying them. The demand for their products began to decline in the late twenties. Today, both the antique fenton glass and the later styles are prized.

Rare Baseball Cards - Build A Collection, Cash In
Written by Greg Shafter
Friday, 29 February 2008

It is well known that many people enjoy collecting baseball cards as a hobby. Any collector will tell you that nothing is more thrilling than finding that elusive card they need to complete their collection. Baseball card collections are incomplete without rare, vintage cards. These kinds of cards are, naturally, worth a lot more.

Most of the old baseball cards are re-productions but a few are still made from the original material. Now these cards are quite valuable as there are only a few of these cards ever seen in public. A few baseball cards can mean approximately 100 or less. The price of these cards is usually based on the availability and of course the condition of the card within the market.

We are all quite aware of some of these rare baseball cards. You might even remember players such as Honus Wagner as well as Mickey Mantle and Babe Ruth. These players each had amazing baseball careers. They were even collectible in the days while they were still playing!

In many of these rare baseball cards you may see worn corners and edges or even some creases on parts of the cards itself, reason being that for some players the companies which produced their cards had the cards printed on thin and poor quality cardboard paper. Due to the fact that many collectors were only children and fans of the game, the cards themselves were not protected.

Now unless there is a large amount of damage to the cards, these rare baseball cards still have the ability of causing lots of excitement when they appear in public. The main reason for this being the lack of cards which can be found by baseball collectors. For this reason when one of these rare baseball cards like that of the T206 Honus Wagner card surfaces you can see that collectors and wealthy fans themselves are gearing up for a high stakes bidding.

The Topps Company's long association with baseball has made it the best-known name in the baseball card market. Its first set of baseball cards, released in 1951, was intended to be used as a game. In 1952, however, Topps produced the set that brought the modern sports trading card to life. Today the 1952 Topps set is one of the most valuable baseball card sets ever produced.

Topps has continued to produce Topps baseball cards sets ever since and today Topps continues to build on its established tradition. Armed with the latest technologies and an unparalleled stable of brands, The Topps Company is leading the charge into the next generation of baseball trading cards.

Most collectors are not able to buy Wagners and Ruths, even if they're serious about card collecting. Recently, MLB cards from the '70s have become great investments for the average collector. Cards of 70s greats like Mike Schmidt, Steve Garvey, Dusty Baker, and other greats have shown significant increases in value.

MLB cards of 70s are still affordable to most people even though their worth is keep on growing. Many of the MLB cards which can be considered as best can be bought under $300. Since their growth potential is very high they can earn a good profit to the collector of these cards.

Those who collect baseball cards find it very exciting to collect rare baseball cards. There are very few original cards and hence are expensive. There are only 100 or less in existence. The value depends on card's condition. The cards of players like Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle and Honus Wagner who had spectacular career. Poor quality of paper or poor handling of the card is the reasons which affect the condition of the card. Public appearance of these cards creates excitement in wealthy collectors. Since 1952 topps baseball cards are more popular. In recent times mlb cards from the '70s have proven to be a great investment.

Back Massager: The Spa Treatment At Home
Written by Gus Murcia
Thursday, 28 February 2008

Few things in life are as pleasantly welcomed as a back massage. Paying for a massage in a spa or at a gym can be quite an investment, so often it's worthwhile to simply spend the money instead on your own personal back massager, and you'll have hours of relaxing, at-home massages. Obviously not as thorough as a professional massage therapist, a handheld back massager or massaging chair can still help work out the kinks in your back, improve your mood, and help eliminate stress from your life.

A small back massager that you can hold in your hand can be easily used to work knots out of your muscles. They are available at numerous stores cheaply, and require just a few batteries to start working, by the vibration of their rubber nodules. Some models add heat for additional penetration into larger muscle groups like the back and upper legs.

Find a kink or a knot it your back, press the back massager into it while it's vibrating and it will be gone in a few minutes. You can use them on your back, your feet, your legs...anywhere you can reach. Ask a loved one to help out in those difficult-to-reach places and it truly becomes a relaxing day.

A massage chair is another alternative. The full body massage chair has a number of rollers installed into the chair's back, and they roll along your spine to remove knots. There are also hard rubber pieces designed to put pressure on various places in your back. Some of these chairs have an optional calf and foot massager, to provide the same services for your lower legs.

Chairs for massaging usually have programmes for various kinds of massage, to help eliminating stress, waking up in the morning or to relax in the evening as well. Most times, you may even compose your specific programme which suits your requirements and rubs you in the proper way.

A great addition to your home to lift your spirits and improve the way you feel physicaly is a back massager. It is easy to find an inexpensive model for sale; they are great presents for holidays or birthdays. Other options are the more expensive massaging chairs, designed for a deep massage to your back. Either option is a great investment that you will enjoy for a long time!

There aren't many things in life more pleasant than a back massage. Professional massages are too expensive and time-consuming, so why not invest the money in your own personal back massager instead? A handheld massager only needs a few batteries to massage knots and kinks away. Apply it to any muscle you can reach and the knot disappears within minutes. A full body massage chair has rollers and nodes that correspond to key areas of your back. A calf and foot massager is available for tired legs. Massagers are easily attainable and are a wonderful addition to any home to keep you feeling your best.

Silver Dollar Coins: Prized Collectibles
Written by Russ Dacha
Thursday, 28 February 2008

Many people like to collect silver dollar coins. These days, silver dollars are rare, and finding one can be a rewarding experience for some. Others, of course, will simply spend any dollars they come into contact with, regardless of what kind!

A Morgan dollar coin is a silver dollar that was put into circulation in the late 19th century. It features Miss Liberty's face on one side, and an eagle on the other. Some refer to the coin as the "buzzard dollar" because the picture of the eagle is rather scrawny looking. Even still, Morgan dollar coins are special coins to have, and because they stopped being made in 1921, owning one is a unique thing.

Some people enjoy trading their coins in order to attain other coins. Collectors may need a particular coin to complete a collection and will often look to other coin collectors to make the trade. To trade dollar coins and ensure an even trade, it is necessary to possess rare coins yourself. Most coin collectors have duplicates of dollar coins that they are willing to trade to help them to complete their collection.

There are many beautiful silver dollar coins. Silver dollars are worth quite a bit more than coins made primarily of copper, and they generally look better. The United States Government issues many commemorative silver dollar coins for limited periods of time, allowing collectors to save these coins and trade them later after they are no longer minted.

The older and rarer a coin, the more that coin is worth. If you have a coin that is extremely rare, it doesn't really matter what condition it is in. If you have a coin that is less rare, its condition will matter and the better it looks, the more money it will be worth. A Morgan dollar that is in Brilliant Uncirculated condition will command a lot of money because it is not only a rare coin, but it is in perfect condition.

The best thing to do if you are considering collecting and trading silver dollar coins, is to do lots of research. As with anything, the more knowledgeable you are about the subject, the more power you will have when working with coins.

Collecting silver dollar coins is a popular hobby shared by many. Circulated between the late 19th century and 1921, morgan dollar coins are sought after due to their rarity. The United States issues commemorative coins for limited periods, increasing their value. Many people trade dollar coins in order to get better coins. Older and rarer coins are worth more, also if it has not been in circulation or is in mint condition it will be very valuable. Conducting research into which coins you are thinking about collecting can help you manage your collection more effectively and gain the coins you wish to collect.

Tankless Heaters, Today's Need
Written by Tammy Fullmer
Tuesday, 26 February 2008

Standard water heaters go through a heat and reheat cycle whether or not hot water is required. This causes one to be paying for water to be heated even if it is not necessary at the time.

A cost-effective and waste-minimizing way to heat your home is the Bosch Powerstar Tankless Water Heater. It warms water rapidly and can deliver a larger volume of output water than many comparable heaters. Know that when you buy a Bosch Powerstar tankless water heater, you're only paying to heat your water and not for the waste and inefficiency that you may otherwise have.

A demand water heater only heats water when it's needed. They can help to save money since they don't suffer from standby energy losses. Further, the easily replaceable parts in most tankless water heaters give them lengthy service lifetimes, usually lasting more than 15 years.

Besides, storage heaters do not last longer. If proper maintenance is done at regularly, it may prolong its life without much loss of efficiency. Heaters where tanks are not used, electricity, propane or gas are used to heat the flow of water.

When the heater's on, it produces a constant supply of hot water. The maximum amount of hot water flow at any given temperature that it can support depends on the heater's capacity. Gas water heaters usually have a larger capacity than tankless electric water heaters do.

When shopping for a tankless water heater, the dealer should provide a number which corresponds to the maximum amount of outflow while still increasing the water temperature a given amount. Many such devices also include an indicator allowing one to define the water temperature at the spigot. These devices use much less energy than their conventional counterparts, in part because there is no wasted heat when the unit is not in operation.

Tankless water heaters are evaluated by the greatest rate of current at which a preferred temperature is encountered. Water heater features include the ability to set a release temperature. There is also a much higher rate of effectiveness with tankless water heaters as it reduces the possibility of standby losses.

It doesn't make much sense to pay for hot water 24 hours a day when you only use it for a fraction of that time. Traditional water heaters heat and reheat the same water constantly, but tankless water heaters don't heat water until it is needed. Gas operated heaters usually have bigger capacities than electric powered ones. A cost-effective and waste-minimizing way to heat your home is the Bosch Powerstar Tankless water heater, which lasts for at least fifteen years with its original parts. Regular maintenance extends its life significantly. If you are looking to save money and energy, buy Bosch Powerstar tankless heater and you will do just that!

Different Sports - Dog Conformation
Written by Bill Brennan
Tuesday, 26 February 2008

Dog conformation is becoming one of the most popular dog sports to date. Conformation events, better known as dog shows or breed shows, is a sport in which registered, purebred dogs are evaluated and ultimately judged on how closely the individual dog conforms to that particular breeds published standard. Over the years, the question of ability for conformation judges has become a heated debate, simply because the hundreds of breed standards judges are expected to be knowledgeable in and the fact that the judges are also subjective, one judge may interpret "dignity" differently than another. Dogs therefore are judged not solely against one another, but by the judges perception of that particular dogs breed standard.

The most prestigious of all conformation shows and the most often covered on television are the events held by the American Kennel Club (AKC). Not all published breed standards are verbatim between clubs. For example, The United Kennel Club’s (UKC) breed standard for the Pekingese varies slightly from that of the American Kennel Club There are three types of Conformation dog shows. Breed groups also vary slightly. For example, the United Kennel Club has eight breed groups, the Terrier group, Sight and Pariah group, Scent hound group, Northern group, Herding dog, Gun dog, Guardian and Companion dog groups. The American Kennel club has seven breed groups, the Non-sporting group, Toy, Terrier, Working, Herding, Hound, and Sporting group. The AKC also has a miscellaneous group. These breeds are acknowledged throughout the world as being purebred dogs, but are not yet recognized by the American Kennel Club.

Within the American Kennel Club, there are three types of conformation dog shows. The most commonly aired on television are the All Breed shows. These competitions offered are for the 150 plus varieties and breeds currently recognized by the American Kennel Club. Dogs in the Miscellaneous group may compete at conformation shows, but are limited to only the miscellaneous class and are not allowed championship points. The Group Shows are exclusive only to breeds within a specific group. The Specialty shows are those exclusive to one breed are varieties therein. For example, the Pekingese Club of America specialty is for Pekingese dogs only but the Poodle Club of America's holds specialty shows that include all three varieties of the Poodle, Standard, Toy and miniature.

Dogs must meet certain criteria before being allowed to participate in conformation shows. All dogs must be at least six months of age or older. Classes for that specific breed must be offered. All dogs must be individually registered with the American Kennel Club. The dog must exhibit qualities dictated by the breed standard and must be unaltered, meaning the dog can reproduce offspring.

Conformation shows can be just as rewarding as it is cut throat. Politics in the dog show arena, not unlike any other competitive sport, has been known to have a wide array of bribery, harmful medicating or the injuring a of a fellow competitors dog, even compromising ones own dog for the sake of the ring. A common example, ginger root being placed inside the rectum of docked tailed breeds as an irritant so the tail will be held erect. However, the rewards of competing honestly and hopefully someday winning, outweigh the occasional negatives and makes conformation dog shows the prestigious sport it is today.

If your not into dog shows, then maybe a game of Billiards is more your thing. Just make sure you use the official rules of billiards to prevent any disputes.

DVD Portable Players: What Should You Look For?
Written by Ian Walf
Monday, 25 February 2008

A portable DVD player to help while away the hours can be a lifesaver on a long family trip, no matter whether it's by car, plane or train. Every brand and model of portable DVD player is different, with a variety of features to make the player more convenient.

The first thing one considers when choosing between DVD portable players is the size of the screen. A player with a built-in screen is compact and perfect for the road. Usually, larger screens are better, and smaller screens could hurt the eyes after prolonged periods of viewing. Although the players with larger screens can be more cumbersome, the larger screen allows more people to watch and makes for a better viewing experience.

One more thing to take into account while selecting a DVD player is the available audio and video outputs. High quality output, such as S-Video or component video, and optical audio out will enable the best possible movie experience with your player. Should you choose a small player without a built in screen, the available video out are a fundamental issue to consider.

At the time of introduction in late 1907 the carnival glass was called as Iridescent Ware. However, people started using the name carnival glass only after collectors in the 1950s began to refer to it as such. This innovative glassware made in highly patterned moulds had a vivid metallic sheen of changing hues on pressed glass articles. Iridescent Ware got the metallic sheen from a special spray of metallic salts on the glass while it was very hot.

Carnival glass is a colored, inexpensive pressed glass that was used to make both functional and ornamental objects. It can be found in a wide range of iridescent colors. Carnival glass is sometimes called dope glass by glass workers because doping is the process of applying the color to the glass surface. Carnival glass production started in 1907. It was used in production of many different pieces and in more than 150 patterns. However, since it did not command the prices expected, it was subsequently discounted.

This glass is available in many translucent colors like primarily amethyst, marigold, coblat, green and red. It is also made in opaque white which is also referred to as milk glass. This glass was also availale in semi-transparent or translucent pale green and was named as Vaseline or uranium glass before the harmful effects of radiation were known. Vaseline glass and uranium glass have small amount of uranium salts which make faint green glass glow on reaction with UV light.

One of the largest producers of this kind of glass was Millersburg glass Company, Ohio. The first glass products of the company were crystal, but the Millersburg plant decided to ride the wave of enthusiasm for iridescent glassware. Thus, in early 1910, the Millersburg Company brought out its line of Radium glassware.

Art Glass in the United States
Written by Menachem Green

What happens when you discover two eye-popping ideas: that glass could be melted at cooler temperatures than originally thought, and just as unprecedented, that glass could be melted, worked, and blown by an artist in a residential studio? If your names are Dominick Labino and Harvey Littleton, the next practical thing to do is to put up a university glass studio where you can train future glass artists. Labino and Littleton are considered as the brains behind the modern studio glass movement in the early 1960s with the just mentioned discovery.

Other glass art pioneers like Dale Chihuly, Ben Moore, and Richard Marquis received Fulbright scholarships that helped fund travel for glassmaking studies abroad. Where else to go in Italy but Murano? Murano, as an aside, is of course the community behind masterpieces like crystalline glass, enameled glass, glass with threads of gold, multicolored glass, milk glass, and imitation gemstones made of glass.

Maestros Checco Ongara and Lino Tagliapietra (who was ranked Maestro at 21) were invited to the Pilchuck Glass School of Stanwood, Washington in 1979. This was the start of an unforgettable sharing of knowledge that criss-crossed both sides of the Atlantic. Glass art in the United States will never be the same.

Reduce Your Baby's Exposure to Toxins in Common Baby Products
Written by Ryan Hurd
Thursday, 07 February 2008

The popular media has seized upon a new study published in February 2008's Pediatrics journal about common additives found in baby products such as shampoos, lotions, baby powder and also baby toys.  These chemical additives - known as phthalates - have been shown repeatedly in studies to be linked to reproductive problems.

The truth is that these findings have been known for years.    Regardless, I will present the dangers of phthalates in baby products and offer some solutions for parents to minimize their risks.   Until the Food and Drug Administration moves on protecting the health of our familes through a long overdue restriction oh phthalates, we must look out for ourselves.

Research into Phthalates

Phthalates are polymers that are added to products for a number of reasons.  They can soften hard plastic, extend the timespan of perfumes, and help plastics retain color.  They also are quickly absorbed into human skin, which is why they are commonly used in lotions.

So this toxin is actually designed to be absorbed.  One recent study found that all babies tested for phthalates in their urine were positive, and 80% of these infants had traces of at least seven different kinds of phthalates.  Now, not all phthalates are considered dangerous; unfortunately, they often come together and are unmarked on ingrediant lists.

One study found reproductive damage in lab animals from phthalates exposure.  Another study suggests that infants with phthalate exposure are at greater risk for reproductive damage later in life.  Yet another study links phthatates to genital malformation in infant boys.   Clearly, the writing is on the wall for this common toxin.

What Kinds of Baby Products have Phthalates?

These additives are in many commercial lotions, shampoos, and baby powders.   In particular, they are in cosmetic products that have perfumes, dyes, and extra creamy textures.  Phthalates are often found in PVC plastics which are commonly used as colored baby toys like plastic balls and other toys.  If the thought of how often your baby chews on his favorite toy is beginning to alarm you, you are not alone.

Also, phthalates can be found in a wide array of plastic dishware and serving-savers, as well as baby bottles and pacifiers.  These plastic products shed phthalates when heated, such as in common house-hold activities as heating bottles in the microwave or sterilizing them in the dishwasher.

Basically, any plastic container marked "recycle #3 and #7" may contain a number of harmful toxins which can be released anytime the plastic is denatured: through heat, sun exposure, or of course, being directly absorbed through the skin in lotions and shampoos, or broken down manually by babies' chewing.

How to Avoid Phthalates and Other Toxins

  • Use only plastics that are marked with the Recycling Code 1, 2 and 5.
  • Choose pacifiers and nipples made of latex, silicone or rubber instead of plastic.
  • Do not microwave or sterilize plastic bottles with the Recycling Code of 3 and 7.
  • Consider organic lotions and  shampoos for your babies.
  • Or look into home remedies for skin protection, such as olive oil and coco butter.

Until the government can regulate the manufacture of these potentially hazardous plastics, we must as consumers look out for ourselves.  Educating parents and community leaders is essential to maintaining the safety of our children.  Support organic baby products and traditional wooden toys

And take heart: every time the news media reports on the problem of phthalates, we are one step closer to seeing some real action from our legal policy makers.

How to get the most out of your Space
Tuesday, 20 November 2007

When you first bought your home you probably thought it was big enough to meet the needs of your family. You soon noticed as time went on and your family started to get bigger you were running out of room. Now, you need to make every space count. There is a way to get the most out of your attic, den and laundry room without costing a lot of extra money to remodel.

Your Laundry room usually holds the washer, dryer and maybe a little extra space for the laundry supplies, an ironing board or a hot water heater. But you can use your laundry room to hold bed linen, a pantry or even towels and wash clothes for the bathroom if you have a small bath. You need to have shelf space on your walls to put shelves up. This will not be a big investment and everything is right there when you look at it in open view. Putting shelves up will give you the extra room that you need to store those extra things you need but you may not have the room for.

The den is a great place to sit around and laugh with friends and family or to read your favorite book or take a nap. The den is used but it isn’t over used. A lot of times people do not use their den except for special occasions. You need to utilize this space, especially if you have children in the home. With children they need a place to study that won’t interfere with everyone. In the corner of the den, facing away from the television you may want to put a desk for homework. This will encourage children to do their homework more and you will see how long it is taking them and help them when they need it. They won’t be easily distracted like if they were in their own room. You may also want to put an entertainment center in that can hold all the kids videos and games as well as a special television to play the games on. If kids have these things in their rooms they are less likely to socialize with the rest of the family.

The attic collects junk over the years or stuff that nobody wants but you don’t want to throw away. Everything goes in the attic. There are several things that you can do with your attic to turn it into a room that everyone will want to use. Create a nice quiet library in your attic. You need a small section of the attic so you can still have a storage area on one side. The library will need walls put up and extra light for reading. You will also need a book shelf to hold all the books in. Finish it off with a sofa or a reclining chair. You may want to put a coffee table to set your drink on or your book if you need to leave the room. Paint your walls a bright color so you will feel comfortable and happy when you are in the library.

Once you have utilized the space appropriately you will be able to feel more comfortable in your home and relax a little more. Make your home more personal by utilizing your extra space to accommodate your families needs.

Take a good look at your floor. Ensure it is being utilized to it's best advantage. Vinyl flooring is a great choice for families. And for hardwood floor repair read this article.

Great Decorating Ideas for Toddler's Rooms
Friday, 16 November 2007

Your toddler is becoming more independent every day. One of the things you are noticing is their reaction when they go to their nursery. They may express their dislike in the room or they may refuse to sleep in the crib any longer. If this is the case, making your toddler sleep in their crib may result in them climbing out which may cause him or her injuries.

You will need to find a way to satisfy your child's need to grow and develop in a safe way. In order to do that you will need to turn their crib into a toddler bed or invest in a toddler bed. Most toddler beds should come with safety rails, but if they don't you will need to purchase them to make your toddler safe during the night. Usually at the age they start to ask you for a toddler bed they are ready and mentally prepared for the change. They still like the security of the safety rails but now they are in control of getting in and out of their own bed. This change in independence may make you fearful but they will adjust quicker than you think.

What flooring should your child's room have. There are many options available but one to investigate is rubber floors they are water, mold and bacteria-resistant.

Boys Rooms

To decorate a room for your son, try using the brown, red or blue colors. These colors make them feel comfortable and warm. They will feel safe and secure if you use these colors to make them feel better when they are all alone at night. You may want to choose one color for the wall and decorate the windows, bedspread and pillows with the other colors.

Let your child help you decide on the colors. If you give them choices they feel more comfortable when they are in their room by themselves. You can add a television or a radio for a little soft sound as they try to go to sleep at night or during their nap. If they have a railroad or car track, put this around their bed or in a corner of their room so that they can see the train or cars fly by on the track.

Girls Rooms

When you decorate a room for your little girl you want to make it special and unique. The traditional colors of pink and white may not be acceptable for your little girls so be prepared for a different color theme that she wants to use. Great colors to use for your little girls' room is yellow, orange, lavender, green or pink. You may want to use the main colors for carpet, bedspread and curtains. Then you can accent the main color with pillows and pictures. You may want to paint the furniture in her room or leave it natural. Add a little corner in the room to put a certain color rug on the wood floor for her to dance or perform in. She may like to sing or dance and this will be encouraging both. You may want to set a small stereo in that corner as well. Your little girl will feel independent and happy as she adapts to her new way of living.

Kids adjust easy to almost any change. If you are having a hard time deciding if they are ready for a toddler room or not, remember that kids will let you know when they are. They may cry when you put them in their room or when you put them in their cribs. They may try to climb out of their cribs, ask to sleep with your or prefer sleeping on the sofa or another spot in their house to avoid staying in their room. When you start seeing these early signs you may want to prepare to upgrade their room to a toddler room.

Creating a Ceramic Tile Wall ? The Work
Thursday, 01 November 2007

Ceramic tile is one of the most beautiful and longest-lasting floor materials and walls. Easy to maintain and clean, ceramic tiles can be used in any room of your home to add a little splash to the décor.

Preparation

The first step in installing ceramic tiles is to prepare the wall. While the tiles can be installed directly onto most surfaces, such as drywall or plaster, if the tile is being installed in a wet area, such as the shower, it will need to be installed onto a different surface. Green drywall is a drywall that is specifically designed to be used in bathrooms and is as easy to use as regular drywall. Green drywall is best for walls that may be exposed to moisture but not in direct contact with water.

For areas that come into direct contact with water, it is best to use a cement backer board. Cement backer board can be purchased in panels and is cut the same way as ordinary drywall (use your utility knife to score the board and snap it at the line made by the knife). Use special galvanized screws that won’t rust to attach the cement backer board to underlying studs. Finish the seams by covering with a special fiberglass seaming tape.

The last step in preparing for installation is laying out your pattern. Locate the center of the wall, and then use a carpenter’s level to mark intersecting vertical (plumb) and horizontal (level) lines. Before you begin installing the tiles, dry fit a row of tiles beginning in the center of the wall and working to the end of the wall. The tiles at both ends should be as close to the same size as possible. If this is not going to happen, you will need to adjust your vertical reference line so that the tiles match up.

Installation

Step by step installation:

Begin in the center on one side of your reference line.

Apply a coat of tile setting adhesive to cover a 3’ by 3’ square area.

Use the smooth side of the trowel to spread the adhesive. (Don’t cover your lines)

Go over the adhesive with the notched side of the trowel to create grooves.

Firmly press each tile in place using a slightly twisting motion to ensure good contact with the adhesive.

Place tile spacers on all four sides of each tile.

Work in three-foot sections from the middle to the end of the walls, continuing until the entire area is covered.

Use a ceramic tile cutter for cutting the tiles at the end if necessary. Use the same process as cutting sheetrock – score a line on the tile with the tile cutter and snap the tile. Use sandpaper to smooth the edge of the tile.

Use tile nippers to cut the tile to fit around irregular obstacles. Nip off little pieces of the tile until you have reached the desired shape.

Grouting

Let the tiles set overnight.

Remove the tile spacers.

Mix the grout according to directions.

Apply the grout at a 45-degree angle using a rubber float.

Press firmly to be sure the grout gets all the way down to the bottom of the seams.

Again, work in 3’ by 3’ areas.

Wipe off excess grout with a wet sponge and clear water.

Let the grout dry for 24 hours.

Buff away any grout haze.

Use silicone caulk to seal the edges of the ceramic tile where it meets the countertop or tub.

Creating a Ceramic Tile Wall ? The Beginning
Thursday, 01 November 2007

Whether you want to give your bathroom an entirely new look or spruce up your kitchen with a decorative backsplash along the countertops, ceramic tile is one project that is perfect for the do-it-yourself decorator. Ceramic tiles can be used in any room in your home and provide an easy to clean surface that adds to the beauty of your décor. In the bathroom, the entire shower can be covered with ceramic tile or a border can be added along the bottom or top of the wall – the only thing that limits you is your imagination. Ceramic tile also makes a beautiful backsplash along kitchen countertops.

While ceramic tile is available in a wide range of sizes, colors, and designs, keep in mind that not all ceramic tile is water resistant – which you may need to keep in mind if also laying ceramic floor tiles. Non-vitreous tile absorb water and should be used only in rooms where it will not come in contact with water such as living rooms, bedrooms, and hallways. Semi vitreous tiles resist water and can be used in areas where water contact is possible. Impervious tiles don’t absorb water at all and is the perfect tile for bathrooms, kitchens, and laundry areas.

Once you have chosen the type, size, and style of your ceramic tile, you are ready to begin the installation process. Here is a list of things that you will need to have ready before you begin:

Spice Of Ginger
Monday, 15 October 2007

Ginger is used in most cuisines the world over, whether it baked; cooked; crystallized; powdered; dried; raw. Ginger is extensively valued not only for its culinary value but its medicinal value as well. Hot and sweet, with well-known aroma, ginger is truly a complete spice able to blend in to nearly any cuisine.

Although we refer to it as root giner, it is actually the rhizome of a perennial plant. The scientific name being - Zingiber Officinale. This comes from “singiveram” meaning “horn-shaped”. Thought to be of Chinese origin, ginger was also cropped thousands of years ago in India and Southeast Asia. It is generally thought to be the first Oriental spice introduced into Europe.

While Asian cuisine customarily uses ginger in its raw form – cut, crushed or grated – in stir fries, curries, chutneys, soups and salads, Western cuisine tends to use ginger in it's dry form – in sweet items like cake, cookies, ginger ale, gingerbread, candies and jams.

Ginger has been recognized for its many medicinal characteristics for thousands of years. It is a accepted cough and flu treatment. Though generally safe, ginger in extreme quantities can cause mild heartburn and it may hinder certain medications.

The unique spice in a variety of forms has demonstrated to be efficient in relieving nausea symptoms especially motion sickness. Ginger in moderate amounts can encourage digestion and prevent bloat. It has been applauded as an aphrodisiac; an antioxidant; instant hangover relief; a mouth freshener; and a mood enhancer.

Due to its anti-inflammatory quality, ginger is great for treating arthritis-related pain, and easing muscular aches and pains. Women throughout Asia use ginger in food and drinks to relieve menstrual cramps; to stimulate uterus contractions; and for breast milk production.

Well I never new all this about ginger and to think I only bought some for my husband last week – chocolate coated of course.

Many recipes use ginger including some of these beef crock pot recipes.

Kick Stress Causers And Develop A Happy Attitude In A Week
Monday, 08 October 2007

Now, not tomorrow, is the time to change your life and view it in a different light. A week is not very long and I'm not going to pretend you will be a changed person in a week but it's a good start on the way to a happier, less stressed life.

There are heaps of methods to 'self improvement' and 'positive thinking' – each with it's own merits and drawbacks. What works for one, won't necessarily be the best for someone else. So here is a list of many different things you can do – choose the ones that make the most sense to you. BUT, and it is a big but – you need to take action for any of these methods to work.

Avoid Stressful People

I have heard these referred to as "stress sneezers" (they sneeze out contagious stress). Avoid them, they are no good for you – if someone makes you feel stressful don't be around them. If you continuously feel worse after being around someone, then that is not a healthy relationship and needs to be avoided.

Learn From The Best

Instead find people who are positive to be around. Surround yourself with happy people and learn how they beat stresses.

Breathe

"Breathe? Of course I'm breathing – wouldn't be stressing if I wasn't". No but breathe deeply and slowly. When ever you feel your stress levels rising just breathe in slowly for a count of 5 and exhale to a count of 10. Repeat several times.

Have Purpose

Have a purpose to your life and know it. It's easy to just talk about it but to make any impact on your life you need to take action.

Stop stress thoughts.

As soon as you start to feel the signs of stress – stop. Stop worrying about "What if". Stop yourself and counter with positive outcome what if's.

Sleep it off.

A lack of sleep can make you more susceptible to stress. Make sure you get a good night's sleep.

Take these points into account and discover a new less stressed "you".

Reap the benefits of the modern hot tub
Monday, 01 October 2007

I think most of us can appreciate the need for some quite relaxation after a hard and stressful day. Some opt for the benefit of a quick drink as an ideal way to wind down. However why not choose a more healthy and invigorating alternative that will literally soak your stress away? One of the best uses you can make of your outside space is to install your own hot tub. Imagine just laying back and washing away the troubles of the day.

Ancient cultures understood the therapeutic benefits of naturally occurring hot and cold springs. The Romans constructed bath houses as they appreciated the healing power of hot springs.

Hippocrates was a great advocate of drinking and bathing in spring water 4 thousand years before the birth of Christ. As you can see owning your own hot tub would put you in illustrious company.

Thanks to the Jacuzzi brothers; a huge hot tub and spa industry with many manufacturers has grown for our benefit. These brothers also realized the benefits of moving warm water early on and developed a pump that would become the jets in a regular tub. We have them to thank. The hot tubs of today are extremely high tech and know just where to place the jets for optimum relief.

The most modern tubs can be customized to include televisions, lights, music and more. You can even install a remote control that will turn on the tub and get the water warm from anywhere with a cell phone; now thats convenience. You might consider the style of hot tub that offers seating in a vertical position. You dont always want to be in a lounging position. Spas and hot tubs are good for whole body treatments and the water should come to shoulder level for maximum stress relief. A hot tub is soothing to the nerves and helpful for bladder and urinary problems, mild colds and low fevers. A dip in the hot tub should last at least 20 minutes.

Hot tubs work by circulating air & warm water through a system of high pressure jets to provide beneficial stimulation of the muscles and relaxation of the body. The jets are situated to target particular muscle groups simultaneously. They may be positioned to operate in a set pattern with an injection of air which provides the bubbling, tingling effect.

The jets can be concentrated to target a certain body area in a similar way to that of the hands of a massage therapist.

The undeniable benefits of hydrotherapy and the improvements in technology have resulted in a massive explosion in the sales of hot tubs and spas. Now is the time to take the plunge and get yourself a hot tub. Create your own oasis of calm in a hectic world today!

Autograph collecting, also called philography, can be fun and rewarding.
Saturday, 08 September 2007

Autograph collecting, also called philography, can be fun and rewarding. Some people are happy to get an autograph from their favorite celebrity and stop there, while others pursue many different autographs. If you're interested in the collection of autographs, the first thing you should know is how to tell a real, hand-signed autograph from a fake.
