December 25th, 2009
Giving out the best for a baby is what every parent dream of, thus a need to establish a child-friendly
environment that will start at their own home. So let us now take a closer look on what a nursery room looks
like.
Babies aging from birth to 18 months need an environment where there is an enough space for them to freely
move. Make sure that it is safe and clean. Some parents spray some disinfectants in their nursery room (but
make sure that the baby is not there to inhale those chemicals). They will soon creep, roll and even crawl,
and will always have the tendency to put unto his mouth whatever that his little hand can hold. So, make sure
it’s sterile.
Designate a sleeping area. It should be an area that is conducive for sleeping. You may place some curtain to
make the room a little darker for her to sleep well. Mental development is fast during sleep, so make sure
that the baby will get enough sleep. Eating area also should be defined and so with a play area. The toys in
the play area should be suitable to there age.
It should be large enough so they won’t swallow it. Stuffed toys again should be cleanse all the time to
avoid molds or bacteria; remember that it is a breeding ground for germs. Place some push/pull toys, climbing
equipment, soft balls to throw to aid their motor development. Again, provide them with enough space in the
play room for crawling, climbing, riding etc. You may expose her then to various textures to aid development
of kinesthesia. Provide her with multi-sensory play materials such as play dough, paint, water,
sound-producing manipulative toys, and soft building blocks made up of non-toxic materials create and the
likes.
You may want to add some music in her room; jazz and classical music according to behaviorist stimulates
development.
An area for preparing food should be different from the area where you wash your hands and change the diaper
of the baby. Food preparation for baby should be clean and free from germs. Wash your hands well all the
time. When bottle fed, hold the infant and do not leave her in her crib while having her milk. Proper eating
habits must be shown at earlier stage. No feeding while they are walking around or crawling and place the
bibs properly. Older babies may eat with their high or at a low table and chair to drink and eat, but should
not walk around with food/drink.
Then, let us try to check on the immediate environment of your baby; these are of course, the parents, nanny
or other family members. These persons should have a nurturing personality that kindles warmth and
sensitivity. Patience is needed here; thus, she must tolerate movement and noise. The first stage of human
development which is the babyhood is considered to be the formative stage.
Thus, appropriate behavior should be shown to them. Reading storybooks, while explaining the characters of
the story and the moral lessons is important. Talking and listening is very important at this stage, so
“baby-talks” is a big NO. Listening here does not pertains to the language but more on to what the baby is
not verbalizing; or simply the meaning of her cries and coos.
Right time and right place orientation starts even from conception. They must learn that there is a time for
everything. There is a time to play, to eat and to rest; a time to be held, talked to, sung to, read to, time
to move freely - on a blanket away from others or to roll, creep, crawl, pull up, walk, time to watch, hold,
move to, and choose appropriate toys and materials.
Remember that a child is a great imitator, and she is what she learns! Happy Parenting!
