If you asked someone in the street how they would recommend treating any disease, then chances are they would say you should take some medication designed to treat that particular disease or condition. For some conditions this is the only way, but for things like acid reflux, or gastroesophageal reflux disease, there are far more natural ways to get rid of it. Sure, antacids work, so does surgery, but given the option would you want to use either of these? Many people have found that their Gerd disappears with a simple lifestyle change.

The most simple thing you can do is sleep in a different position. If you’re a typical acid reflux sufferer, then you suffer the most at night, and this is almost certainly down to the way you sleep, probably flat on the bed so gravity can’t hold stomach acid down. No one is suggesting you sleep sitting up, but think about getting a big pillow to hold your head and upper body more upright. This will be uncomfortable at first until you get used to it, but will soon become bearable, and will allow you to sleep all night without acid reflux.

There are some people who will never give up eating two or three huge meals a day, and going without anything the rest of the time, but if you can convince yourself this isn’t necessary then you could greatly help your GERD. Acid reflux is likely to occur when your stomach is full, so never let it fill right up. You can do this by eating smaller meals for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and snacking in between so you don’t get hungry.

Finally, the hardest part. It won’t make you happy to know, but giving up chocolate, fizzy drinks, mints, alcohol and smoking will make your acid reflux several times better. All of these cause irritation to the lower oesophageal sphincter, which should stop stuff from the stomach moving upwards, but when aggravated, it opens allowing acid reflux to occur.

So as you can see some simple lifestyle changes are a natural heartburn remedy all by themselves. Adopting these changes can make a huge difference in your life and might even help your eliminate acid reflux completely.
