All medical professionals and practitioners will understand the importance of a good lab coat. Especially for those who are involved in doing research that often uses a wide variety of chemicals, many will find that a good lab coat is vital in ensuring you do not get harmed by any accidentally spills of substances that might be physically harmful. Most people will tell you that a lab coat is white, but if you do a little bit of research on the Internet today, you will be amazed to find lab coat in all imaginable colors. This mainly serves the needs of most medical institutions, whereby the different colored staff can be identified by the color of their lab coats. Though it is common to find most medical institutions issuing white lab coats to the doctors, it is not mandatory. You will also find that most nurses and staff, who play a supporting role, will be issued green or blue lab coats. Either way, different institutions will have different guidelines; none of which are wrong. With the different colors of lab coats available today, you will also find many different types of lab coats as well. Lab coats have now been developed with different materials for different purposes, which is why you should consider your type of usage before deciding on which type to use. However, there is a common and general rule of thumb to follow concerning lab coats. Once a lab coat is stained or contaminated by a chemical, it is very important that you remove your lab coat and send it to professional chemical cleaners immediately. This is normally done to prevent any further contamination of other chemicals, or in some cases, to prevent any physical harm that might happen because of exposure of the split chemical or substance. Should the amount of chemical contamination exceed acceptable levels, you would have no choice but to throw your lab coat away. If you have to do this, you will need to ensure that your lab coat is properly disposed of, as it should not be mixed with the rest of the trash. Another thing you will need to note, is that it is highly recommended that you wear your lab coat properly at all times. This usually means that you have your lab coat fully buttoned up or zipped, and always have your sleeves fully extended and covering your arms. If you do not wear your lab coat properly, it will not be able to protect you from any toxic chemical substances that might cause you harm. These are just some of things that you might want to take note of, concerning lab coats. Even though a lab coat might seem like a simple item, it plays a very important role concerning your safety, and should be used at all times necessary.
